Houston Medical Center Overview-
Welcome to the largest medical district in the world!
The Texas Medical Center was established in 1945, in part, with funds endowed to the M.D. Anderson Foundation. Doctors, nurses, physicians assistants, specialists, x-ray & lab techs, pharmacies, make up only some of the workforce within the district.
Major Streets in the Houston Medical Center
Zip Codes zoned for the district are pretty much these listed below:
Parking in TMC-
Parking can be a nuisance, especially if your new to Houston. Driving down Main Street you will notice the Metro Rail shares a lane with turn lanes. Be cautious of the signs and flashing lights, as many very serious accidents have occurred as we learned this new rail system.
Most hospitals and professional buildings within the area have valet parking. It might not be a bad idea to make use of this, especially if you are not familiar with where to park and how to get from where you ended up to your appointment. (If you are in a hurry, your best bet is always the valet.) Typically, from what I have seen, there is only a variance of a couple dollars (certainly not worth the hike) if you plan on being there all day. The valet does not offer in and out privileges, but they are usually open from 6 am till about 11pm.
Replacing of the current parking system with state-of-the-art parking software and equipment manufactured by Scheidt & Bachmann. All TMC garages should be converted by June 1, 2009. Some of the exciting benefits:
Chip Coin Technology – No paper tickets! Instead customers will receive a SmartChip coin when they enter a TMC parking facility. This Smart Chip coin eliminate ticket jams and magnetic-strip defects, two of the most bothersome sources of problems with our current parking system. High Speed Network-based System – Resulting in faster transaction times and higher speed credit card processing Credit card functionality -- Credit card in-and-out capability which allows customers to use a credit card to enter and exit. TMC’s new parking system will feature an improved visitor pass program as well. The new Smart Pass Program will be available to customers of the Texas Medical Center directly through many of our new pay stations strategically located in our parking facilities. Smart Passes will be available for purchase at the customer's convenience any time of the day or night. The popular 5-day visitor pass will be replaced with the 5-day SmartPass. This 5-day consecutive pass provides in-and-out privileges at a discounted rate of $52. Our second pass, the new SmartPass Value Chip, may be purchased for $100 but includes $115 worth of value on the chip (an immediate 15% savings). In addition, it will debit a maximum of $12 each calendar day (midnight to midnight) allowing in-and-out privileges during a single calendar day. TREVISIO RESTAURANT A few rental options- ask for the videos & you can watch them right at your desk! Try to avoid the virtual (coke- bottle tours) and take the room by room tour instead. You will then be able to (through a process of elimination) narrow it down, and without ever having to get up from your monitor. Just like you were searching for a house, you would employ the expertise of a real estate agent, apartments, townhomes, condos & lofts are no exception. FREE to you, just like you were looking to buy a house. The agent will be paid by the owner of the property. No, it will not increase your rent- but it WILL INCREASE your chances in negotiations of price. Typically you will have the opportunity to be escorted or a valet to see the rental site. Make sure you accept this offer, because it can help turn an all day affair into only a couple hours, especially if you are not familiar with the streets or area. You could potentially miss out on seeing the agent wheel and deal for you. Using the properties comps through out the area, you may even save money on things such as your rental rate, your application fee, admin. fee, pet deposit, location charge (example: poolside is sometimes a bit more than those without the view.) Don't leave home without your negotiator. MacGregor (Martin Fein!)

You will have many choices, but realize the properties in the Houston Medical Center are almost all on a required 60 day notice. In other words, they can lease the rental 60 days before the resident moves out. Recently, clients have needed every bit of that 60 days to get into the unit they really want. You will probably wish to begin your search no later than 90 days prior to your move date. (Not saying it cannot be done, should you need to move earlier, but it sure does open up many more possibilities.
Transportation in the Medical Center- Some choose to drive, bus, ride a bike, walk, car share, or ride the rail! Why ride the Houston Metro Rail- This flashy new above ground subway system is exactly what we have needed to make traveling, in a city with a population of 4 million+, a little bit easier & a lot more fun. You can start at the Astrodome & Reliant Center (Home of the Astro's, the Houston Live Stock Show & Rodeo, the Houston Car Show, The Houston Boat Show, and so many other venues. Pass through the well known Texas Medical Center, Miller Outdoor Theatre, Zsa's Zsa's (formerly the old Warwick Hotel) The Houston Zoo, Hermann Park Golf Course, the High School for Performing Arts, Shopping, bars, Post Rice Lofts (formerly the Rice Hotel,) The House of Blues, U of H, the new 4 block plaza, George R. Brown Convention Center & Minute Maid Park. Right across the street is the Bus, a popular hang out after the Astros play. The Lofts at the Ballpark is also within walking distance. Popular clubs like "the Warehouse" (known for it's high ceilings & concrete floors, is a popular local music venue,) Sambuca's (Italian Cuisine & live Jazz Bands- very famous!) Kim Son (Vietnamese meets Chinese- always packed!) are just a couple of the many savory flavors you will find right off the rail. |
