When Researching East Downtown Houston, I stumbled upon what very well could be the new buzz word for Inner-Loopers- "EaDo," as nicknamed by the East Downtown Management District. Intriguing me enough to wish to find out more about the recent and planned development within the area, it's obvious that one word sums it up well, "urbanites," or perhaps even "EaDo's!" Reinvented warehouse buildings, the new fad, as well as completely new venues like the Toyota Center (Go Rockets & Aeros, & concert arena,) The George R. Brown Convention Center, & Minute Maid Park (Go Astros!) Don't forget the pride of Downtown, the snazzy new 4 block outdoor plaza, complete with white lights at night for strolling- Discovery Green Park. You cannot forget the new home to "The Blues Brothers," The House of Blues, owned by the kind of people the paparazzi actually follow around.
Staying true to virtually all of Houston, you will notice that you can be in the most expensive residential neighborhood, drive two blocks and see "ma & pop" stores, which pridefully make up for a good portion of Houston's storefronts and businesses. Back in the day, when Houston was very young, it grew very quickly. The best visual I could give would probably be "it grew in rings outward." Where you might have a one time elite neighborhood, now it's older and not as kept up. The Jones's had to keep their place on the social ladder, so they moved to the sparkling new subdivision just 4 blocks in any direction, and so on. Sporting treasured oldies like Alexan Lofts, a registered landmark of Texas, now converted to midrise posh lofts.
The coolness was confirmed when the Fine Finger Company built an extreme (in all definitions) HiRise, One Park Place. Towering in the center of the 3 biggies (Toyota Center, Minute Maid & George R. Brown) as if to add completion to a Houston foothold triangle of commerce. Although treasured oldies like The Alexan Lofts, formerly a cotton mill, is now a registered landmark of Texas & converted to the highly coveted midrise lofts. You will find the original brick, wood & steel meet exposed spiral ducts & Wi-Fi to create the lofty urban metro setting that moves the decimal point in the right direction.
Eateries and fine dining are on every block. If you tend to get bored with "same old" & wish to tantalize your taste buds daily with a different cuisine, then you will be delighted. One of the absolute favorites is Kim Son (Vietnamese,) but you will find everything from sub-shops to the finest Kobe beef steak, cut for those who don't own knives (The Lake House.) Starving yet?
Also, popping up in little seedling rows, you will love the tri-level private residences, custom designed and built for perfection. This is the kind of place that makes you say "My name is Bond......James Bond." You may prefer the condo life & wish to live above a wine bar or bistro, which I could see would definetly have perks of it's own!
Whether you are out on the town with friends, watching the out door ice-skaters, or hob-knobbing with the athletes (& wannabe's,) you will find that this once old part of Downtown Houston has no less than become the most sought after "place to be" for entertainment- of all sorts, residential housing & of course in regards to commerce. Even if you are only here visiting, you really won't want to miss taking with you as much of the energy (& adrenaline) as you can fit in your suitcase. Perhaps you will even say what I did "I wanna live here........Now!" |
